Raitt hosts Halton Budget Summit
Economic Recovery Remains Priority for Halton
MILTON, ONTARIO. Member of Parliament Lisa Raitt today met with community and business leaders from Halton Region to discuss priorities for the upcoming federal budget.
“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government has delivered for Halton’s municipalities through one time, targeted investments in our infrastructure and facilities,” said Lisa Raitt, Member of Parliament for Halton. “Now, the focus shifts to creating conditions for economic recovery and growth.”
Participants of the roundtable included Councillors Sharon Barkley, Colin Best, Mike Cluett, Rick Di Lorenzo, Zeeshan Hamid, Arnold Huffman, Blair Lancaster, Cindy Lunau, Rick Malboeuf, and Greg Nelson, as well as representatives from the Burlington, Oakville and Milton Chamber of Commerce.
“The people around the table today are leaders in our community who have a vast amount of knowledge and through bringing them together, we were able to have a very productive discussion on priorities and exchange of ideas,” continued Raitt.
The Harper Government has delivered substantial tax relief to Canadian businesses and job creators. Since 2006, the Harper Government has:
- Eliminated the corporate surtax for all corporations as of January 1, 2008;
- Eliminated the federal capital tax as of January 1, 2006;
- Increased the income limit for the small business tax rate to $500,000 from $300,000;
- Reduced the small business tax rate from 12 per cent to 11 per cent; and
- Frozen Employment Insurance (EI) premiums for 2009 and 2010 at their lowest level since 1982.
“Those representing local business told me that low taxes are encouraging businesses to invest more in the Canadian economy, which is stimulating job creation and economic growth,” added Raitt. “Helping businesses grow and create more jobs is good news for the economy, and good news for Canadian families, especially here in Halton.”
